How Hoofprint Calculators are Revolutionising Equestrian Sustainability

As sustainability becomes a more significant part of our daily lives, it’s essential to consider our hobbies and interests' environmental impact. As equestrians, we need to consider the role our horses play, particularly when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions. That's why the development of the Hoofprint Calculator by the Wageningen University & Research (WUR) in partnership with the Equestrian Employers Association (EEF) could be a game-changer for equestrians. In this blog post, we will dive into what this ‘Hoofprint Calculator’ is and how it can help horse owners make more sustainable choices, as well as the UK’s own answer to a ‘Hoofprint Calculator’ with Agria Insurance.

Understanding the Hoofprint Calculator

WUR and EEF’s Hoofprint Calculator uses data from WUR’s study, which tracked horses from birth to maturity across various competitions and disciplines. From this data, the researchers developed an equine-specific emission calculator designed to let horse owners know how much greenhouse gas their animals produce.

Why It's Important to Use a Hoofprint Calculator

As horse owners, we already know our horses' impact, but with the Hoofprint Calculator, we can now calculate their greenhouse gas emissions. By doing so, we can make sound decisions to reduce their carbon footprint. We can determine what elements of our horse's routine and management can be optimised, making it easier to reduce their environmental impact.

Existing Hoofprint Calculators

The UK’s first carbon-positive pet insurer, Agria Insurance, currently has their own version of a Equine Carbon Calculator, in which questions about your horse’s feed, size and travel determine its hoofprint in which you can offset emissions with Eco Offset. Agria Insurance say they base the emissions data on peer reviewed papers, emissions conversion factors from the UK Government and DEFRA, and follow the GHG carbon accounting protocol.

It is unknown how this will differ from the WUR and EEF’s Hoofprint Calculator until their presentation on the project named ‘Making Strides in Sustainability’ which is available to join here on 10 October 2023.

Final Thoughts

Hoofprint Calculators can be a significant moment for equestrians looking to reduce their horses' impact on the environment. By calculating our horse's carbon footprint, we can make better decisions, not only for the environment but for our horse’s health too. As equestrians, we have a vital role to play in protecting the environment and reducing climate change. And with the help of the Hoofprint Calculator, it’s a task that feels more accessible and achievable. Give it a try, and let’s take control of our horses’ environmental impact and create a healthier planet together.
