With a history dating back over six decades, this event has not only established itself as one of the most challenging three-day events in the world but has also become an emblem of British equestrian excellence. Join us on a journey through time as we delve into the rich history of the Defender Burghley Horse Trials.

Origins and Inception

The Defender Burghley Horse Trials had its humble beginnings in 1961 when its founder, the 6th Marquess of Exeter, Hugh Cecil, decided to host an event on the grounds of his ancestral home, Burghley House. Inspired by the success of the Badminton Horse Trials, the event was envisioned as a showcase of the best of British eventing and an opportunity to prepare riders for international competitions, including the Olympics.

The inaugural event, known then as the Burghley Three-Day Event, took place from 11th to 13th August in 1961. It featured a grueling three-day competition encompassing dressage, cross-country, and show jumping, a format that has remained largely unchanged over the years.
