The Hanoverian horse originates from North West Germany where it was used for agricultural work and as a carriage horse. The Hanoverian was developed from the native Holstein horse and imported Trakehners and Thoroughbreds. In 1867 a breed society was formed and the Hanoverian was developed as a military horse and later as a general farming horse. Today the Hanoverian is valued as a competition horse.

The Hanoverian Horse stands 15.3 to 17.1 hh.


Appearance of the Hanoverian Horse

The Hanoverian has a medium sized head, long strong neck, and sloping shoulder, powerful body with deep girth, strong hindquarters and hard well shaped feet. The Hanoverian horse can be any solid colour but chestnut, black, brown and grey are most common.


Temperament of the Hanoverian Horse

The Hanoverian Horse is willing, bold, sensible and intelligent. It is well known for its good temperament and grace.


Uses of the Hanoverian Horse

The Hanoverian is competition horse well suited to show jumping, dressage and eventing as well as general riding.
