The American Paint Horse is descended from Spanish horses brought over to the US by explorer Hernando Cortes in 1591. It was a popular horse with the American Indians who used the American Paint Horse as a war horse.

Appearance of the American Paint Horse
There are three types of American Paint Horse; Overo, Tobiano and Tovero. The Overo has bold white head markings, irregular scattered coloured patches and often with dark legs. The Tobiano has a coloured head and the coloured patches are more regular, oval or round and the lower legs of the horse are white. Some American Paint Horses have coat patterns which show characteristics of both types and these are called Tovero.
American Paint Horses are white with varying amounts of another equine colour such as black, bay, brown, chestnut, dun, sorrel, palomino, buckskin, gray or roan. The American Paint Horse has distinctive stock-horse conformation.
